In recent weeks, having less racial variety in the modeling world has been the talk of the style community and I couldn’t be more happy. It’s disgusting to believe that we’ve actually eliminated backward in the last ten years as it pertains to representing women of color on high-fashion runways and in the webpages and advertisements of women’s mags, but we’ve. Per yr on outfits 20 billion, there’s a sensational absence of non-white encounters in the modeling world. How come this matter?
First, the style industry sets the criteria for beauty and by not choosing non-white encounters to signify their brand and style, the message they’re sending is that only white women meet their standards of beauty. Girls and women are constantly reminded that they don’t like “right” when they turn through mags and rarely stumbled upon a woman who appears like them. The relevant question occurs whether it all boils down to racism.
I think racism definitely performs a big role in the lack of non-white models, but it is also organized racism which impacts the whole industry. But this doesn’t explain why we had more non-white models 10 and 15 years back than we do today. The only description I can come up with is that the style industry has a problem conflating race with tendencies.
