Greg is a senior engineer with a house in the suburbs and a desk that is always clean and he cares about things like the dielectric constant of corrugated cardboard. You take the rules that lived in Greg’s head and you build them into the physical shape of the tag itself. If the metal frame of the crate is the problem then you build a tag that uses the metal as a part of the antenna instead of fighting against it.
The Hand That Decides

I still think about Leonard and the priest who called him Larry. It was a small mistake but it changed the whole meaning of the moment for everyone in that room. It reminded me that the hand that holds the paper or the hand that holds the sticker is the most important part of the whole chain.
We can build the best chips and the best antennas in the world but we are still at the mercy of the person who shows up to do the work. The only way to win is to make the work so simple and the hardware so robust that the name on the paper does not matter and the tag on the box speaks for itself no matter who put it there.
I have made this mistake myself many times and I have stood in front of clients and promised them the world because I saw it work in a small room. I forgot that the world is bigger than a small room and it is much messier and it is filled with people who do not care about my project.
I learned to love the physical reality of the factory floor and the grime of the loading dock because that is where the truth lives. You can keep your clean desks and your perfect slides and your green check marks.
